I am confident that every one of us wants to achieve one or other priorities in our new year resolution. Let me not go deep dive into it. I wish everyone a stroke of good luck with it.
An important thing that we forget is our health.
In our digital-first world, we tend to forget that we are sitting for a long time (8+ hours) knowingly or unknowingly due to the proliferation of different forms of digital screens. The research studies elucidate the following findings:
- Physical inactivity contributes to over three million preventable deaths worldwide each year (six percent of all deaths). It is the fourth leading cause of death due to non-communicable diseases. (Source: Better Health Channel)
- An analysis of 13 studies of sitting time and activity levels found that those who sat for more than eight hours a day with no physical activity had a risk of dying similar to the risk of dying posed by obesity and smoking. (Source: Mayo Clinic)
In a nutshell, any form of extended sitting at a desk, chair, couch, or in front of a digital screen and lying down for too long can be harmful to both your physical body and mental health. You may feel the strain on your neck, shoulder, hips, upper, mid, and lower back that leads to chronic health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, lower back pain, and so on.
We live in an instant gratification world with these questions popping up in our minds. Am I right?
- What's a quick remedy?
- What's in it for me?
- Why should I bother being young or healthy?
We forget that our body needs some physical activity on a typical day. Being active is not as tough as you think.
You don't need to undergo a complete self-transformation of yourself to form a habit of doing yoga, brisk walking, cycling, and so on to do these simple stretches and body movements at your convenience.
It doesn't surprise us that we spend 8+ hours per day sitting on a chair. Moreover, we can't underestimate the challenges we face every day at our work.
In my opinion, yoga is for everyone. I am excited to see you on the mat/chair as a regular yoga practitioner and yoga instructor. I suggest you start doing some stretches and body movements in the comfort of your chair.
The key benefits of doing desk/office yoga include:
- Better physical and mental health
- Increased productivity
- Instant stress buster
- Improved posture
- Results in sound sleep
- Better flexibility
- Better immunity
I regularly do these poses to keep me active and healthy. It works wonders with my flexibility and better health.
I suggest you take a couple of chances to try at your leisure and convenience for better health. Feel free to affirm that your health is the priority before starting every day.
